The ONS has based this estimate on data from the last census performed in 2001.
Each year updates have been made to the estimate using the cohort component method
and a combination of other data sources.
Below is a breakdown of the estimated population per country in the UK, as at June
2010:
- Total UK population: 62,262,000
- Population of England: 54,234,000
- Population of Scotland: 5,222,000

Population per UK country:
Key UK population trends:
- The UK population is continuing to increase. The estimated population of the United
Kingdom increased by 470,000 (or 0.8 per cent) between mid 2009 and mid 2010.
- Natural change (i.e. population change from births and deaths) is currently having
a larger effect on the population growth in the UK than migration. It was estimated
that of the 470,000 person increase in the UK, 52 per cent of the increase was due
to natural change and the remaining 48 per cent was due to the migration of people
into the UK.
- The population of the United Kingdom is increasing at an increasing rate. The rate
of population increase between 2001 and 2010 was 0.6 per cent per year, where as
between 1991 and 2001 it was 0.3 per cent. Between 1981 and 1991 it was only 0.2
per cent.
- Due to gradually improving healthcare and health innovations the UK population is
also aging (i.e. more people are living for longer). In June 2010 it was estimated
that there are 1.4 million people who are aged 85 or over. Where as in the 1981 census
it was determined that the number of people 85 or over was only 0.6 million. The
median age at 2001 was 37.9, in mid 2010 it was estimated that the median age was
39.7.
- The eastern parts of the United Kingdom have seen the largest population increases
since 2001.
